last night, a boy i've never met told me how he'd blindly picked a spot on a map &driven two hours just to see what was there (the most interesting thing being a pink bicycle in a front yard.) i shared with him my current project, one that's been leading me through endless melbourne suburbs, leaning out my car window photographing the fronts of houses - old ones i had lived in, houses of past lovers &friends &others where i simply admired the perfectly straight hedges. curious, both with him &the idea of the unknown, i asked for his suburb &picked an intersection for him to venture to &photograph. in return he did the same.

today, with three cameras &my melways in the passenger seat, i drove to his chosen destination. funny too as he chose a winding street i drive down multiple times per week, yet had never taken notice of the street name, only how fast i could drive its slippery road. i photographed an assortment of things, but what came to mind while standing on the round-a-bout of this busy intersection was the conversation we had had the night before.

him: i hope you find something interesting at that spot
me: i'd be happy with an empty parking lot. im just really curious
him: you wanna know whats ironic about this?
me: what?
him: the most interesting thing there will be you

i know i've been hibernating lately. i feel like i'm under watchful eyes. but it's paying off &my 'significant progress' is being noticed by those who decide the grades. i'm missing important fancy dress parties, bailing on dates &feel slack with even my closest of friends (i'm sorry). but i'm painting again &just squeezing out new paint &the smell of turpentine makes me breathe a little easier.

not long to go now though. i think i'll go straight to the bookstore to celebrate the completion of folio deadline hell. pretty please, recommend me some reading material! a little description would be nice too, i need to stock up on novels before italy so i can read outside our apartment by the lake. (amazing. also, a big thank you if you commented on that entry, sorry i didn't get back to you my excitement got ridiculous).

so yesterday i got accepted to study my second semester in prato, italy. i've been going to info nights about this exchange since i was sixteen, i really can't believe i'm going. i'll be fucking off at the end of august &living in an old textile mill turned apartment. travelling through italy on weekends &detouring on the way home to london to hang with my sister &hopefully bristol to see my muffins.

it's funny how things turn around. the day prior i was clearly so down about my lack of creativity. now i'll have a painting studio in 14th century building &be living in a town where few locals speak english. last night was sleepless, daydreaming about seeing the sistine chapel. fuck, i really just can't believe it.

i travelled over 70ks this evening to hang with my one &only 'trash'. donuts &surprisingly good drive-through coffee. ramblings in seedy carparks &cigarettes at even seedier 'lovers point'.
(i would have hiked that far for you too, but you've missed your last chances now).

this city is so foggy this evening. driving 'round the golf course to get home was actually scary. lets grab torches &long necks &play hide&seek.

i'm cutting about 10 inches off my hair next week. goodbye mermaid hair &security blanket.

i've been scribbling in moleskins in the middle of the night again. those 20-something degree nights where i've had the air-con on so high i've needed over sized teacups of apple tea to keep warm.

lately i've seen the rapture (&met/fell in love with luke jenner), taken drive-through maccas coffee to the drive-in cinema (but peered at the screen in the car behind the fence), played late-night nintendo, drank expensive cocktails on city rooftops, let my bank account reach an all new high, gotten lost on purpose &braved a high school reunion.

tuesday i'll be alloted my second year studio space. i'll be painting again &creating a little hidey-hole with a kettle &a constant supply of skittles (i'll make you tea if you visit). i've actually missed smoking on the fire escape stairs &the horrible free wine at the student run gallery. i think, more likely perhaps, i need to be back there to rid myself of the guilt from letting my creative spurs go unnoticed &untouched for four months.

i've never been one for competing. perhaps that lack of drive is a downfall on my part. you've awarded me the silver medal anyway. even 'most improved' awards are given out of sympathy or guilt, you just felt obliged.

i've been absent in a lot of ways lately. i had a wonderful birthday last month, a christmas night spent with the best friends i could ask for &a new years so trashy i don't remember djing (dj pussyface) which ended with us playing 'marco polo' in underwear at 7am. i've danced live to the gossip &more recently cried then lost my voice (repeat x 100) at kings of leon. i've spent nights in gutters &then bars where they offer foot stools. we had hungover 'graduation' bbq's &many nights of goodbye drinks to my muffins. bristol has stolen two of my most treasured parts of melbourne. i purchased the slr camera of my dreams but haven't figured out the settings yet &finally spent a boozy evening playing guitar hero.

i want more. from myself mainly (but from you a little too). i am making big elaborate plans.
ps. thank you for the body heat. &for letting me fall asleep to the cure. i think i have to back down though. again. i will stop glorifying you all in my head to avoid bitter disappointment.

i love the days when the smallest of pleasures like buying $6 english china in op shops, running for trams &watching, waiting for the sun to peak back through the clouds can make your day. this week i've smiled over spontaneous coffee dates (L), new jeans to stretch in, spud bar dates with muffins, finishing painting projects, daydreaming of holidays soon to come &movies that make the loudest trashbags shut up &think.

the good ones are always junkies.
i was (very obviously) giddy about this one too.

i hate that ace weekends (25th birthday dinners at mexican restaurants, developing film, $4 pizzas, laughing despite horrible circumstances, blushing uncontrollably over seemingly perfect individuals, sentimental muffins, smoking inside pubs after hours, working on 2 1/2 hours sleep &watching bambi, hook, pocahontas &aladdin whilst 'working') can be tainted so easily.

it's all petty really.

i spent last night in the company of THE CURE. dancing for three hours never felt so good. i had dreamed of the day i'd hear robert smith churn out the tunes i danced every day to in my bedroom when no one was watching (or even when they were).

last week also included:

i am bracing myself to return to uni. i'm ready to get off my creative hiatus &stretch my boundaries again. i want to exhibit this year. i'll have free booze at my opening, i hope you'll come.

days are mushing &blending &blurring in to each other a lot lately. things are changing &moving at rapid paces, yet i can't remember the order of events or what i ate for breakfast. but regardless, in amongst my uni break laziness, things are happening.

i keep having off days where my procrastination &wandering mind leaves me in a depressed rut. but there is a lot i should be smiling about including my incredible gig calendar (red riders &plug-in-city this week, patrick wolf, hot chip, klaxons, bloc party, midnight juggernauts &&&&&THE CURE!). this week is a perfect reminder of why i love melbourne: art exhibition openings with free booze, dj muffin loving friends opening new indie nights at favourite venues &a music scene that kills.

i knew when i found this book that it was meant to be mine.
i'm using it as a visual diary of sorts for a project i'm working on over the semester break. i'm not quite sure where this project of mine is going but i'm excited &driven about it regardless.

this reads: "life is a giant canvas &today i am gonna inhale smoke and spit out coffee (spelt incorrectly) after a sunrise surf in paradise." i stole it off a swing tag in stussy months ago.

i did this at random &it just sums up a situation i was in perfectly.

i feel lost having declared this finished.
i have spent many late nights with incense, green tea &music blaring. i've had a pretty wonderful two weeks taking dancing breaks (especially when 'wolf like me' comes on shuffle) in my empty garage.

this week, in my day of desperate need, i realised how truly lucky i am to have that person i can run to. the one who, after even just a coffee date can turn around your mood &leave you giggling for days. i am so thankful that there is one being i can allow to know me completely &honestly. &lucky too, because he turned what was potentially a horrible day into one i'll never forget. thank you times a million poop scooper.

today i cared for my mama with a migraine. we laughed in bed having breakfast, cried at the cemetery &linked arms walking down the supermarket isles. i need her.

an elderly man got the #3 tram. he was wearing a navy suit. matching vest &hankerchief in breast pocket. he was carrying a small bouquet of hand-picked flowers. i was reminded of beautiful things that exist. it was then when i furiously started my thinking about the difference between existing &what it is to be living.
